First Communion

Preparing Children for First Communion

Students in 3rd grade and above are invited to a First Communion Festival, held each year during Lent.  The festival will help prepare children for their first communion. This time for learning is intended to give participants a greater understanding of the sacrament of Holy Communion and why Christians celebrate it.

The classes include banner and bread making, instruction on communion, the Seder meal, and a pizza meal for families. Every child is ready for this instruction at different ages. We ask that parents talk with their kids about this and decide together as to when their child is ready to receive communion.

At least one parent or grandparent is asked to attend with each child and find a way to volunteer at the event. Volunteers are needed for set up, clean up, registration, banner/bread making and meal set up.

On a following Sunday Zion celebrates “First Communion Sunday” where the worship services will be centered around this gift of grace and we will share the first communion with those who have received instruction.

Before receiving their first communion, students must be baptized.
