House of Grace, the new ELCA congregation in Montrose, is uniquely positioned to minister to the community through Grace Place, a family ministry center. They are launching Homework Helps, an after-school program for local elementary students to help them succeed.
Pastor Kimberly Buffie has begun working with the principal of Montrose Elementary school to design a program to assist teachers and students by making sure kids in the program finish their homework assignments. The kids will have a safe space to gather, a nutritious snack, computer and internet access, and mentors. Assignments and folders will be sent directly to the mentors.
After homework is done, the kids will get a story from the bible and some free time for fun. After all, the motto of House of Grace is “Where community and ministry intersect, that is where we find church.” Pastor Buffie relates that elementary aged children already routinely show up at Grace Place, even without a program in place,
For them, this is the only church they know, but it is enough. Here they know that Jesus loves them too.
Financial and volunteer assistance will be necessary for this program to succeed. Your prayers, partnership and support are greatly appreciated as we come together to be church for the sake of Jesus Christ and for the sake of the world.
