Zambia Devotion: August 5

Pastor Suzi Orlopp

This is my life work: helping people understand and respond to this Gospel. It came as a sheer gift to me, a real surprise, God handling all the details. When it came to presenting the Gospel to people who had no background in God’s way, I was the least qualified of any of the available Christians. God saw to it that I was equipped, but you can be sure that it had nothing to do with my natural abilities. And so here I am, preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming known and talked about even among the angels! Ephesians 3:7-10 (from The Message)

Why must we go out to the far ends of the world to preach the Gospel of Jesus when people do not have to know Jesus in order to enter the house of God? We must go out because we want to share with all people the abundant love and hope, joy and peace that Jesus brought to us. We want to ‘proclaim the unfathomable treasure of Christ’ and ‘throw light on the inner working of the mystery kept hidden through all ages in God, the creator of everything.’ Henry Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

This trip is about so much more than building the library. If we simply wanted to see the library built we could have easily just sent the check and hired people to build it. No, this trip is about seeing relationships formed, bridges built, hearts shared, and most importantly living out God’s call to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength and to love your neighbors as yourself.” As we encounter people throughout our trip we know we will be encountering the Living God. We do not bring God with us, for we know God is already there, rather we go to be the “love and hope, joy and peace”, we go to be the hands and feet of Christ in this world. We go as humble servants who God has called, equipped and promised to walk along side. And so we go to encounter the living God in others as they encounter the living God in us.

Prayer

Good and gracious God, let us be your hands, feet and heart, every day not just as we travel but every day. Help us to see your world and children through your eyes. Give us open hearts and minds to encounter all you would have us see. We praise you for equipping all of your children to serve your world. Thank you for leading us and walking with us. In your name we pray. Amen.
