The words God spoke to Abraham were,
“I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”Genesis 12:2-3
We call those verses the Abrahamic Covenant. It is one of the defining passages of the entire Bible. This passage reveals why God chose Abraham and the people of Israel. God’s purpose and intention are revealed here. What is God’s overall plan? To make the Hebrews powerful? To reward the Hebrews with land and prosper them because of their own goodness? To separate out the chosen people in order to honor them, serve them, please them? To play favorites with his children? No!
The purpose behind the Abrahamic Covenant, the blessing of the Hebrews, was to bless the world. The role of the Hebrew nations was not to be favorite sons and daughters receiving all sorts of material blessings and have a good life, but to be God’s instrument so that all of God’s children become truly blessed. Israel was blessed in order to be a blessing. Their primary task in life was not to act as if they were number one, but to ensure that even the least of all peoples would feel the showers of God’s blessings.
Blessed to be a Blessing is the theme of our Fall Stewardship Emphasis. We will take three weeks to unpack this Biblical concept. First, we will look at the greatest way God has blessed us – with a Savior for this life and the next. Second, we will consider just how much God has filled our lives with – the blessings God has showered upon us. Third, we will look at how we can all participate in fulfilling God’s purpose – how we can be a blessing to others.
I hope you will join us for the Fall Stewardship Emphasis and message series, Blessed To Be A Blessing, on October 27 and November 3 and 10. We will all be asked to reflect on how we as individuals and as Zion Lutheran Church can be a blessing to those around us. Everyone will receive a packet of information. In that packet will be an Estimate of Giving Card, indicating your estimate of your financial support of what God is doing through our congregation for 2020. I hope to see you then.
