Be Courageous

Elizabeth “Rae” is 13 years old and in the 8th grade.

My family consists of my father, Peter Mies, my mother Janine Mies, and me. I love music from any genre and some of my hobbies are rock collecting, playing piano, hunting, reading, learning sign language, poetry, and drawing.

Rae is going into her third year of confirmation.

My favorite part of confirmation is probably small group. I was friends at school with most of the kids my group. I always loved how open most conversations are.

She has great memories of growing up at Zion.

When I was in Joy Choir and we did the play/musical “Rescue in the Night,” I can’t remember the name of my character; I think it was Gustav or something like that, but it was a big burly man that was the third advisor of the king. I had so much fun doing that play!

“I see God working to heal others. I want God to help others around me. For me God tells me in small little ways to be courageous, to help others, and I’ll try my best to do everything I can to help others.”

Rae’s favorite Bible verses are in the book of Matthew

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it

Matthew 7:13-14

These two verses tell me that life is difficult and destruction is easy, but without challenges I could be boring and blank so I keep going towards life.

So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your father. And even the hairs on your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you were more valuable than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:26-31

This tells me people do wrong because of fear of mortal death. It tells us only fear who can destroy life after death. To me this stands to say be courageous in God’s name.
