Come As You Are

Jill Davis, Generations In Faith Together Coordinator

Can I share something with you?

I miss seeing you at church on Sundays. Vacations, games, sickness, work, and weather keep us away from worship sometimes and I get that. Life happens.

It’s when you don’t show up because of a walker, cast, or new bruise or bump on your face, that your absence hurts the most.

You know why? Because I would hope that in church, among your church family, as a part of the body of Christ, we’d all come with that willingness to show up. Even if we’re not physically whole. Yes, it puts one in a vulnerable position; to be open to the wondering eyes of others. The gaze from folks who’ve come to know you, and might be caught off guard if something has changed for you. But at the same time, aren’t those souls and compassionate hearts behind those eyes, exactly the ones who you want to lift you up and keep you in their prayers?

Feeling connected, feeling loved, being a part of a family, Christ’s family, are all ways that actually help one heal. So next time you’re inclined to stay away from us because you’re not your usual self, take the chance. Take the chance to show up, and see how sharing your brokenness, just might help make you whole again.

God’s Peace, Jill
