Connecting With Middle Schoolers

Pastor Suzi

In just a few months the incoming 6th graders will be starting their confirmation journey. We are looking for adults who would like to journey with a small group through their confirmation journey. These adults can be anyone who would like to help kids grow in their faith, enjoy fun and laughs, grow in their own faith and help fulfill the baptismal promises we made to these young people. We have seen the trend for small group leaders to be parents of the students, however studies have shown youth who have adults other than their parents active in their faith are more likely to stay active in their faith into adulthood. So we would love to see a variety of adults step into the role of small group guides. Kris and Adam are just a sampling of the current and past confirmation guides who will be happy to share their experience of serving as a small group guide. For more info about being a small group guide, please see Pastor Suzi.

Being a new member to Zion Church and also a first-time small group leader seemed a bit overwhelming to me at first. However, it was just the opposite! Being a small group leader allowed me to support my daughter’s learnings while connecting with others in the group. I love that I am able to connect with my daughter and the group throughout the evening but the best part is the great conversations my daughter and I have on the drive home. It’s about connecting and talking about what we learned and how to apply in today’s world. We had a smaller group this year and over the course of the year my daughter and I made connections with some of the girls and parents and have become friends! It truly has been a blessing to be a part of leading my daughter’s group and I would highly recommend it.

Being a confirmation guide has been such rewarding and fulfilling experience for me over the last two years. Words cannot express how awesome it is to see these kids mature from sixth through eighth grade. The big (and sometimes even little) questions and discussions we have are inspiring. It is fulfilling to know that I hopefully have a little place in each of their spiritual growth journeys, because I know they each have a place in my own, as I continue to grow in my own faith through being a small group leader. It has helped form a spiritual bond between me and my daughter Lulu that previously didn’t exist. I know sometimes I get an eye roll or a head shake from her when I’m being “that dorky Dad”, but I know that the time we share during confirmation each week and worship on Sundays has connected us spiritually more than we were before.
