This summer, Zion members Dave and Colleen Wray are spending several weeks sailing 750 miles from Racine, Wisconsin, to Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Dave and Colleen met at Zion through their involvement with Boy Scout groups using the building. They have a combined five grown children, all confirmed at Zion. Colleen is part of the Rebecca Circle, helps at the annual Santa Lucia supper, and visits nursing home residents. Dave & Colleen also own David Wray Automotive and are a sponsor of Zion’s monthly newsletter.
Dave grew up on Lake Superior in Thunder Bay, Canada and has always loved sailing. Dave and Colleen began sailing together seven years ago on Buffalo Lake.
When we bought our first sailboat together in 2005, it was beyond my comfort zone to even sail on Buffalo Lake! I’ve learned so much, and when people ask me about it, it seems important to say that you are never too old to learn a new sport or activity. Dont wait till tomorrow, or retirement, or what ever other excuse there might be.
They progressed from sailing on Buffalo Lake to Lake Pepin on the Mississippi, then Lake Superior. They recently bought a 36 foot Catalina in Racine, and this summer they are sailing it to their home port, Port Superior in Bayfield.
Our general route will be up the west coast of Lake Michigan (along the Wisconsin side) then crossing the 56 miles over to the Michigan coastline. Included will be a sail up to Charlevoix, stops at Mackinac Island and sailing under the Mackinac Bridge. The northern route will take us up the St Mary River, through the Sault St Marie Locks and west across Lake Superior.
