Joyce was born and raised on a farm in Rockford, MN, baptized in St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hanover, and later a member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo for many years.
Her husband, Gerald, is a lifelong member of Zion, and Joyce became a member after their marriage. They have two daughters and one son (deceased), six grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Joyce worked part-time at the Buffalo Library and the City of Buffalo offices for 40 years, and for 14 years as a custodian in the St. Michael Albertville School District, where she still subs. She enjoys gardening, time at the cabin, reading, and visiting with friends. She is also a caregiver for family members.
For almost as long as Joyce has been at Zion, she has been involved in Zion’s kitchen ministry in various capacities.
Many years ago, I would help Inez Thorson in the kitchen and enjoyed working there. Also, Doris Henson was my mentor for many years and taught me many things.
Joyce helped Doris with many funerals and other functions over the years. When Doris was unable to continue as kitchen coordinator, they reversed roles with Joyce taking on the lead position, although Doris still helps with funerals when she is able.
As kitchen coordinator, I like to keep the kitchen clean and orderly. My favorite food event is the Lutefisk Dinner. I have prepared the cranberry relish for many years as well as helping prepare the apple crisp and working at the supper. I helped at Vacation Bible School for the first time this past year. I helped make food for the children and teachers, which I enjoyed.
Joyce also served on Zion’s Property Committee for 30 years, and is a member of the Lutefisk Committee.
Joyce’s favorite Bible verse is John 3:16, which was her confirmation verse.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
