Sanctuary Update 04.2021


The money has been raised, the contractors have been hired and we are ready to begin Renewing our House ~ for Worship. Come join and be part of this great project!

The “Renewing our House ~ for Worship” campaign to raise funds for the Sanctuary remodel project officially closed on Sunday, April 11. We raised $95,590.02 for the project far exceeding our goal of $77,000 and demonstrating your commitment to Zion and the project. However, we will continue to accept gifts designated for the project with any funds not used specifically on the Sanctuary project to be designated for other uses around the building.

Contributions can be made by mailing or dropping off an extra check at Zion. Checks should be made out to Zion Lutheran Church and noted on the memo line for the “Sanctuary Renewal Project,” or online through InFellowship (choose “Sanctuary Redesign Capital Campaign 2021” drop down).

Because of your generous donations, we are able to upgrade the tile under the altar area from vinyl to ceramic, hire a professional painter, and possibly install hearing aid loop technology throughout the Sanctuary.

New communion rails which were not included in the original estimate will also be constructed to replace the old and very heavy rails. The new rails will be made of locally sourced red oak with two vertical black metal supports in the middle. A prototype can be seen in the picture and also in the narthex.

The Property Committee has awarded the bids for the work and the project is scheduled to start on Sunday, May 16, at 1pm. At that time, the Sanctuary will be closed and volunteers will begin the work by removing the pews and other furniture in the room. All are welcome to come and help start this project! The pews will be stored in Fellowship Hall while the Sanctuary is closed. We anticipate the Sanctuary being ready for use again on or about June 11th.

  • Acoustic Associates of Plymouth will be removing the old carpet and installing the new carpet and tile.
  • Gunder Church Furniture from Humboldt, IA (who were the original supplier of the pews and chairs) will be reupholstering the pews and chairs. However, the new pew seats take about 90 days to manufacture and will not be ready for installation until approximately July. So the pews will go back into the Sanctuary with the old upholstery but the seats with the new upholstery will be installed as soon as we receive them.
  • Dryreson Painting will be painting the north wall and the Sanctuary door and window trim along with trim on the inside of the entrance doors, the office area and the Fellowship Hall.

There will be lots of opportunities for volunteering your time and labor towards this project, and kids as young as 12 years with help from their parents can volunteer. We will need help on Sunday, May 16, at 1pm, to remove the pews and furniture to start the project and in the future to re-install the pews as well as when we install the new pew seats when they arrive. We will also need help preparing and sanding the door and window trim for the painter and construction of the new communion rails. Your volunteer hours will help keep the cost of the project as low as possible. Keep an eye on Facebook and weekly email announcements for exact times and details for the volunteer effort.
