I have really enjoyed my time as a shepherd in Vacation Bible School. It’s fun to get to know the kids and to get excited with them about the role of God and Jesus in their lives.
The unique thing about Vacation Bible School is that talking about our faith is an integral part of our day for a week. As a parent, I recognize how important it is to teach our kids about their faith in a purposeful way. We sometimes forget to explain to our kids that we make the daily choices we do because we’re living by God’s word. Throughout VBS we have opportunities to talk about various ways God is working in our lives. We spend the week with kids talking about God; celebrating God; doing art, singing, and playing games about God. It really helps them see how integral he is in our lives even if we don’t always remember to talk about Him. The activities are fun and engaging. Kids associate learning about God as a fun experience.
The art projects, such as T-shirts they made, get brought home and can serve as a reminder about what they learned at Vacation Bible School. As a parent it also gives me a stepping off point for what to talk with my kids about at home. Vacation Bible School gives a fun opportunity to help our kids understand the basis of our value system. I feel truly privileged to be a part of it. I encourage others to be a part of it as well—it’s a rewarding experience.
