Nearly every good fairy tale, every good story, has a theme of transformation. Frogs become princes, villains become heroes, ugly ducklings become swans. Even modern movies have the same concept deep at their core. The shallow socialite learns how to care for others, you get the idea. The stories that really draw us in are those that invite us to experience the transformation of the main character, to see them become something better, more complete.
The gospel shares much with these fairy tales but for one difference: the gospel is true! Jesus brings this story to us, saying “The kingdom of God is at hand, repent and hear the good news!” All of a sudden, we are called to be the main characters of our story, of our own fairy tale, of our own journey of transformation into our best selves.
Soren Kierkegaard said this –
And now, with God’s help, I shall become myself.
I invite you to become yourself with God’s help this Lenten season. Join us following the Lenten worship services at noon and 6:30 to discover “the Life you’ve always wanted”, a guided large/small group session meeting for six Wednesdays in Lent.
See you in church!
